Bamaga

A community of banana palms and stilt houses, Bamaga is a town in the state of Queensland. Situated close to the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula, the area is located some 2,677 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, the state capital. It was named in honour of Bamaga Ginau, chief of the Saibai islanders who founded the community. It has an estimated population of 784 residents.

Following their displacement from Saibai Island, the islanders established Bamaga in 1947 and settled in the area. Governed by the Local Government Area of the Northern Peninsula Area Region, the town is part of the State District of Cook (in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland) and the Federal Division of Leichhardt (in the Australian House of Representatives). Today, it is the administrative centre of the Far North Cape Region.
